KEMPEGOWDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BANGALORE

GVK Skycity

In December 2009, GVK acquired a significant stake along with the management of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) which operated the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), Bengaluru.

GVK developed a comprehensive new Master Plan, which envisaged construction of a new Terminal 2, a new second runway and ancillary facilities to cater for the projected traffic of 55 mppa by the year 2029-30.

As the existing terminal was capacity constrained and not able to meet the traffic growth, expansion of Terminal 1 was required to meet the short term demand before Terminal 2 was commissioned. The capacity of Terminal 1 was therefore expanded from 11.4 mppa to 20 mppa and the area of the terminal was doubled to approximately 158,000 Sqm from 75,000 Sqm. This expansion was a major challenge as it had to be executed all around the operational terminal where the traffic was growing. This enabled GVK to bring about a sea change in the passenger experience and provided a world class Terminal 1 to the city of Bengaluru that was completed in February 2014.

The new Terminal at KIA not only reflected the city’s dreams but also embraced the culture, ethos and landscape of the state of Karnataka. Thus GVK brought KIA on par with the best in the world in terms of conveniences and facilities. GVK also conceptualized and worked on finalizing the design of the unique “Terminal within a garden” for the upcoming Terminal 2.

GVK also provided management expertise for developing the vision and preparation of the comprehensive masterplan for BIAL's Sky Garden, the City Side Commercial Development. The 500 acre mixed use development when completed, would become a vibrant mega aero city providing a retail, commercial, entertainment and lifestyle destination in Bengaluru.

GVK’s extensive experience in the hospitality industry facilitated a comprehensive project management and technical service, which led to the successful commissioning of BIAL's first 134 room luxury hotel, the Taj Bangalore in the aero city complex.

In July, 2017, GVK divested its stake in Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to Fairfax Group, Canada, which acquired this stake through its wholly-owned subsidiaries in Mauritius, and completely exited from BIAL.

Thus, GVK left its indelible mark in the Indian Airports sector by transforming KIAB into one of the busiest and best airports in the world.
